San Felipe del Morro, also known as Castillo San Felipe del Morro, is a citadel located in San Juan, Puerto Rico. It was built between the 16th and 18th centuries and served as a defensive fortification to protect the city and harbor of San Juan from attacks by sea. The fortification is composed of six levels, including underground dungeons, barracks, and storerooms.
The citadel is named after King Phillip II of Spain, and “Morro” means “promontory” in Spanish, referring to the rocky headland on which it was built. San Felipe del Morro played a crucial role in Puerto Rico’s history and was involved in numerous battles throughout the centuries.
